U.S. Supreme Court Hears Case on Puerto Rico Legal Status Within the United States

On January 13, the U.S. Supreme Court heard Puerto Rico v Valle, 15-108. The case involves criminal law, but it requires the Court to decide if the government of Puerto Rico is sovereign or whether it is subservient to the United States government. According to this story, a majority of justices appear to be leaning in the direction that Puerto Rico is not sovereign. The story says Justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor are adamantly opposed to that idea, however.
