West Virginia Independent Candidate Challenged Because he is a Registered Democrat

Erik Wells is an independent candidate for County Clerk of Kanawha County, West Virginia. His petition has enough valid signatures, but his ballot position is being challenged because he is a registered Democrat. See this story. West Virginia has no law saying an independent candidate cannot be a member of a political party.

  1. I had seen this earlier today and posted the link in response to the Darrell Castle Idaho situation before reading this far down on BAN. I am positive that Mr. Wells is wrong since he is, in fact, a registered Democrat here in West Virginia and had every opportunity to run in his party’s own May primary and/or change his registration to unaffiliated (“independent”) before the deadline. His wife, Natalie Tennant, is the WVSOS and should know better, you know, like how she engaged in electioneering on the voter registration office steps on election day in 2014 – a clear violation of election law. This ballot challenge is being filed on behalf of the county clerk who filed the complaint against Tennant. TOUCHE!
