Nevada State Senator Asks Legislative Staff to Draft a Bill for a Top-Two System

Nevada State Senator James Settelmeyer (R-Minden) has asked legislative staff to draft a bill to put a top-two system in place in Nevada. The draft probably won’t be available until February. Senator Settelmeyer reportedly isn’t fully persuaded of the virtue of a top-two system but apparently wants the idea aired. Thanks to Doug Goodman for this news.

Nevada State Senator Asks Legislative Staff to Draft a Bill for a Top-Two System — 6 Comments

  1. No, absolutely not. Kill this bill before Top Two gets another chance to spread like the disease that it is. We need Ranked Choice and/or Proportional Representation instead.

  2. Expect to see the LPNV & Janine Hansen come out in full force against this once the legislative session starts.

  3. That would be a disgrace. Third-parties in California use to get 10-15% of all votes for most state wide offices. Now it’s an awful two candidates who happened to have the most money. There’s almost no way to hurt third-parties more.

  4. Top 2 continues to be a perversion version of IRV.

P.R. and nonpartisan App.V. — pending Condorcet math.

  5. To All: This is Doug Goodman. It’s called political reality. Last session the BDR for top-three w/RCV did not make it into the bill SB 499. My proposal for this session is a single election in Nov using RCV. There is still a chance a bill draft will be submitted. While not ideal, Sen Settlemeyer’s bill for top-two is progress. If passed, other options can be explored down the road. Check out http://www.nevadaelectionreform.blogspot.com for details.
