California Republican Ashley Swearengin Won’t Run for Governor in 2018, Making it More Likely that Only Two Democrats Will be On November 2018 Ballot

Many powerful California Democrats have signaled that they intend to run for Governor of California in 2018. On December 14, one of the few Republicans who had been considered a strong contender for Governor, Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, said she will not run for Governor in 2018. See this story. This increases the chances that the 2018 California primary will result in only two Democrats being on the November ballot for Governor.

Swearengin will only be Mayor of Fresno a few more weeks. She did not run for re-election.

  1. NO hack primaries.
    ONE election day.
EQUAL nominating petitions ONLY for ballot access.

P.R. and nonpartisan App.V. — i.e. NONPARTISAN executive officers and all judges.

  2. On the other hand, if the California Republicans can narrow down their primary choices to just one candidate, they may have a chance at getting that candidate on the Nov. 2018 ballot. Under “Top Two,” they would be much worse off if they were divided among two or more candidates in the California primary.

  3. But the 2016 US Senate election showed Republican Party leaders don’t have the ability to narrow their field down. There were 12 Republicans on the June 2016 ballot for US Senate. By contrast, there were only seven Democrats. Republicans need a star and they don’t have one. Democrats have several stars.

  4. “Democrats have several stars.” Really ? ? ?

Obama was as close as the Democrats had to a Rock Star. He turned out to be a big fraud. He ran the economy into the ground, waged endless war and implemented a Healthcare Plan that confiscated what little wealth working Americans had to enrich an already bloated and rapacious Insurance Industry. History will remember Obama and the Democrats for their deceit and treachery. Clinton ran as the Continuator of Obama’s legacy and was expected to landslide Trump. Trump was portrayed by the Media as a Dope and Clinton did her best to tar Trump as a dupe of Putin. Clinton had the undying and undivided loyalty of the Feminist Movement and despite all that had her ass handed to her. The current crop of “stars” for the Democrat Party have no crossover over appeal they are strictly candidates that have personality cults chasing after them. It was the Democrat Party who took a page out of the Republican Party Playbook by pitching a “Big Tent”. A tent they were loading up with Capitalist Big Business Types. November 8th tore the “Big Tent” to shreds. And the leftover residue is the seething anger of the masses who quite rightly clued themselves in to the fact the Democrat Party left them twisting in the wind. There is approximately 1100 Days left before the 2020 Campaign starts. Do you really think the bitterness will wear off by then Richard ?

In the past the Democrats have always used the malfeasance of the Republicans to call home the Democrat Party faithful. But there are distinct signs the damage done this time could be permanent.

  5. Richard Ryder should run again. He ran back in the 90s as a Libertarian. Now he is a registered Republican.

  6. My employer did very well under Obama.I have a job for central Garden and pet whose main headquarters are located in California.

  7. Some people don’t want to work to.Utah did something smart .The state passed three day weekend laws.Republicans nationwide should pass legislation around the country making this a national law. They would be heroes.
