Curiously he had sought the Republican nomination,but had refused to change his registration. In New York party bosses have to give permission for a non-member to seek nomination.
It may have been a blessing in disguise as the Republican nominee finished 4th with 3% of the vote behind Green nominee Howie Hawkins who had 4%.
