Lawsuit Filed to Strike Down San Antonio Library Policy on Where Petitioning May Occur

San Antonio public libraries do not permit petitioning on the sidewalks in front of the libraries. Instead, the library says all such petitioning must be carried on in “free speech zones”, which are usually far from the entrance. On July 19, the San Antonio Firefighters’ Association filed a federal lawsuit seeking to force the libraries to allow petitioning on public sidewalks near library entrances. San Antonio Firefighters’ Association, Local 624, v City of San Antonio, w.d., 5:18cv-745.

The case is assigned to Judge Xavier Rodriguez, a Bush Jr. appointee. So far the city hasn’t responded to the Complaint. Thanks to Linda Curtis for the link.

  1. There have already been court cases where it has been ruled that it is legal to engage in free speech activities on library grounds.

  2. MUST SUE FOR BIG $$$ DAMAGES TO BANKRUPT THE ROBOT HACKS — to get others to be super-sensative about CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

  3. ALSO WHERE POSSIBLE GET THE HACKS CHARGED WITH USA/STATE CRIMES FOR SUBVERTING DEMOCRACY.

SEE USA 18 USC SECS 241, 242, ETC.

  4. I could not find a map of the Free Speech Zones on the library web site. I looked under “Services”. Discovery of how the zones were sited would be interesting. Are they ADA compliant? Are there fire ants? Will groups like the LWV be permitted to leave their literature within libraries?

In Houston, the firefighters union had to get a court order to have their petition to be checked (this was many months after it had been submitted). Nothing says “this is the way we have always done it” like having someone who has /worked/ for the city for 65 years doing the verification. The city still has not placed the measure on the November ballot.
