David McReynolds, Socialist Party presidential nominee in 1980 and 2000, and long-time activist in antiwar activities, died on August 17, 2018. He was 88 and lived in New York city. Here is his wikipedia page. Thanks to Jack Ross for this news. UPDATE: here is a New York Daily News obituary.
FURTHER UPDATE: this article mentions the cause of death.
Just read about this. McReynolds definitely had some flaws, and I personally think the SPUSA was right to censure him, but I think his death is a shame, and I deeply respect his political campaigns of the past.
Of course David had flaws — who doesn’t? But his virtues far outweighed them. While others preach tolerance, David actually practiced it. He didn’t disparage someone for not agreeing with him — in fact, he genuinely wanted to know why the other person believed what he did. He was a kind person, gentle, thoughtful and considerate. The world will be a poorer place without David McReynolds in it. We were blessed to have him in our lives.
