Minor Party and Independent Candidate Vote for Top Offices is Lowest Since 1982

Although the election returns for 2018 are far from complete, it is possible to know now that the minor party and independent vote for the top office in each state this year is only 2.8%. This is the lowest percentage since 1982, when it was only 1.8%. The highest percentage since World War II was 2010, when it was 5.4%.

“Top office” means the most important office in each state. Governor is deemed to be the most important office in each state, if that state held a gubernatorial election. For states without gubernatorial elections, U.S. Senate is considered the top office. For the handful of states that had neither office up, the top office is the statewide office that is closest to the top of the ballot. Kentucky was the only state with no statewide offices up, so for Kentucky, U.S. House is considered the most important office.

  1. I guess most voters are not willing to waste their votes when the future of humankind is at stake!

  2. Another Communist left v Fascist right showdown battle coming ??? Duh.

How about vote percentages for lesser partisan offices — state education boards, etc.

States are DEAD — due to SCOTUS perversions of General Welfare subclause and inter-state commerce clause in 1787 USA Const 1-8

Shows in USA Prez year turnouts vs other year turnouts.

IE each elected Prez LAWLESS TYRANT — each with hoards of robot stooges

    — esp in gerrymander USA Senate — getting robot stooge HACKS into SCOTUS esp.

See esp Spain 1931-1939 setup for WW II.

  3. I count no fewer than 4.57 million unique Libertarian Party voters, nationwide. Assuming 114 million voted, that’s going to be 4.01%. That’s just slightly better than the 3.94% who voted for a Libertarian candidate in 2012.

So, top office aside, it was a down year – worse than 2014 or 2016 – but not a catastrophic, worst in three and a half decades, kind of year.

  4. I was noticing low third-party totals myself, which is a shame.

Ac Casual Observer, it’s not wasting a vote. It’s absurd to think we’ll agree with that opinion when this is a site dedicated to giving news on third-parties.

  5. Our team isn’t doing a good job and we need to try harder.

To that goal the United Coalition USA has established the Pure Proportional Representation (PPR) Electoral College and the threshold for being elected is set at 1/439ths (plus one vote) to elect each Elector.

We invite all those interested to join the team. Be sure to contact us directly should you have questions, comments or concerns.

Our team has more than twenty-three consecutive years of experience counting votes under the PPR vote counting system like in Cambridge Massachusetts, USA, Earth.

  6. James,

I believe that CO was being sarcastic. Every election is “the most important election of our lifetimes” and thus not the “right” election to vote third party.

  7. 2010 recent high —

obviously due to 2006-2012 Great Depression II

    — $$$ TRILLIONS in paper assets wiped out — of the middle/lower econ classes —

by the FELON banksters / gangsters

    — BAAAAD loans for folks who should NOT have gotten loans – esp for new housing.

USELESS govt HACKS — letting the rot go on and on – until 2008-2009 CRISIS.

  8. Implement a vote for 2, top 2 system. Each party nominates one candidate. Voters would have to vote for 2 candidates, forming potential coalitions of voters. Primary elections held on march, first round would be held in september, final round would be held in november. Wasted vote syndrome wouldnt be a problem.

  9. Jim, my post isn’t about the minor party vote for lesser statewide offices. That vote was very good. My post is about the vote for the most important office on the ballot, which is generally Governor.

  10. Shouldn’t comparisons over time take into account the implementation of top two in California in 2012? Because California has a large population, the elimination of minor party candidates from the November ballot has to have had a noticeable effect on nationwide totals.

  11. Yes trillions of community wealth wiped out esp in communities of people of color. Fraud continues and is setting up next manufactured financial disaster that Trump and GOP is setting us up for. Question will b how far do Democrats go along with it this time. If progressive Democrats r not ignored by Pelosi and Schumer law and order will return and we can truly recover. Don’t fall for “bad loans” propaganda just look at Wells Fargo with fake accounts which is the tip of the iceberg. ANY mortgage can b toxic so check ur paperwork ans who ur paying!!

  12. How many RED Donkeys supported the Fed bailouts of the 2007-2012 banksters/gangsters (by adding more $$$ TRILLIONS to the USA national debt) ???

Ex-Rep Barney Frank (MAJOR top RED Donkey STATIST) loving his Fed welfare pension ???

  13. If he has not already said it, we are mere days away from Sean Hannity saying that “this election (2020) will be the most important of our lifetime”. He has said that since at least August of 2004. The reason he is right is because our all-powerful gov’t is getting bigger and bigger (despite often being run by that limited gov’t party called the Republican Party). People in the Constitution Party look forward to when the general gov’t is so small that people scarcely give it a thought.

  14. How big was the USA regime in 1927-1928 ??? — end of the roaring 20’s

    — before STATISM and STATISTS took over in 1929-1941

    — ALL folks and ALL of their property are tools of the *STATE*

    — to be CONTROLLED – birth to death —

esp. in STATIST WARS of massive (if not TOTAL) death and destruction.
