Josh Putnam Points Out that a Republican Can Get His or Her Name Placed in Nomination at 2020 Convention with Plurality of Delegates in Only Five States

Josh Putnam, an expert on national presidential conventions of the two major parties, here points out that the Republican rules for the 2020 national convention permit a presidential candidate to be placed in nomination if that candidate has support from a plurality of the delegates in any five states. That rule was passed in time for the 2016 national convention, and it is too late to change it for 2020.

By contrast, in 2012, a candidate needed majority support from delegations from eight states.

  1. Isn’t that just a return to normal? The 8 state majority, rather than 5 state plurality, was to shut down Ron Paul.

  2. Do they make exceptions to favorite son/daughter candidates who only have their home state?

  3. One more reason to —

abolish ALL caucuses, primaries and conventions — of HACK extremists.

    ONE election Day.

    PR and AppV

  4. Local Hacks trying to get some attention from final Prez candidate

    — to be later appointed to some Fed HACK job — esp. USA judge ???

  5. I doubt that any Republican candidate other than Donald Trump will get support from a plurality of the delegation in multiple states in 2020. But If I am wrong, and Trump winds up having viable opposition in the 2020 primaries, he will have a lot more problems than the difference between having 5 and 8 states to get a name submitted for nomination at the convention.
