Hank Adler has this interesting article in Townhall about what would happen if no one got a majority in the electoral college. The Constitution says in that case, the House would choose the President, with each state getting one vote. Most commentators think that provision ruins the chances of any presidential candidate who isn’t the Republican or Democratic nominee. But Adler points out that if the House is unable to choose anyone for President, in 2020, it would be easy for Vice-President Mike Pence to be elected by the Senate to a new term as Vice-President, and therefore he would be acting President. This would motivate the Democratic members of the House to use their votes for president to choose the independent as the new president, rather than see Pence as the acting president. Adler doesn’t really make this explicit, but it appears to be what he is suggesting.

This is exactly why McMullin pushed so hard in Utah. Had he won that state, and Clinton picked up a few more, he could have been chosen President as the compromise candidate despite not even being a ballot option in some states.

Regarding Egg McMuffin, keep in mind that he was also on the ballot in only 11 states, meaning that voters in 39 states had no ability to choose him, or voice any view on him as President, one way or another. I think what he was advocating was despicable. If the Electoral College in 2016 had to be deadlocked, it would have been far preferable for Gary Johnson to have been the third participant. Even Jill Stein would have been preferable to Egg McMuffin.
He was a registered write in for some states, in fact in Michigan he beat the Natural Law candidate.
He was pushing for the Never Trump vote, and being a Mormon meant Utah was the ideal state. I believe his other high marks were in Wyoming and Idaho.
I call him McMuffin as well.

Who’s to say the Dems would keep the house and the Republicans would keep the senate? The new Congress is seated on the 3rd of January BEFORE electoral votes are counted by congress.
You have to carry at least one state to make it possible. George Wallace in 1968 was probably the guy who came closest to achieving this, as he was able to win several states. Therefor, whoever is going to do this needs a strong geographic base somewhere. Gary Johnson might have been able to pull it off in 2016, if he carried New Mexico, and Clinton carried Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, but none of those “might have beens” happened.
Regarding the Adler article, he mentions but does not elaborate on the fact that the US Constitution requires each state have just one vote (meaning virtual disenfranchisement of the voters of the more populous states). This means at least 26 states would vote Republican, according to their current federal delegations, voiding Adler’s speculation.

If the presidential race is that close, then the composition of the house won’t change much.
Unless the independent pulls enough to get around 50 electors, the party with house control will flip some electors to keep the independent out of the top 3. And if the independent gets 50 electors, he will totally disrupt the election (see 1912, 1968, 1992).
