How the Recent Special Election in California for State Senate, District One, Ended up with No Democrat on the Run-off Ballot

California held a special election for State Senate, District One, on March 26. No one got a majority, so there will be a runoff in June between two Republicans.

This letter to the editor of the Siskiyou Daily News explains that a former Republican, Steve Baird, changed his registration to Democratic and entered the race. It appears that he was not a sincere candidate, because he espoused policies such as permitting legal abortion on anyone under the age of 25 years. It also appears that if he had not been on the March 26 ballot, the only other Democrat, who was endorsed by her party, would have placed in the top two and qualified for the runoff ballot.

Here are the unofficial election returns from the March 26 election.

  1. should the line: “such as permitting legal abortion on anyone under the age of 25 years” be
“such as BANNING legal abortion on anyone under the age of 25 years”? otherwise that’s a pretty mainstream stance

  2. Brandon: It sounds like Steve Baird was taking a sarcastic position that abortion would be legalized not only at any time during pregnancy, but for many years after the child was actually born. This might have been a satire on the recent abortion bill in Virginia.

  3. After reading it again I see I misinterpreted it, thank you for clarifying

  4. Baird registered as a Democrat in 2017 when he moved to Sacramento County. He had run for the senate seat in 2016, as a Republican, claiming that the incumbent Ted Gaines had not done enough for the creation of the state of Jefferson.

This (parody?) video claims he is an extreme libertarian.

It is unlikely that his votes were from stupid or ignorant Democrats.
