Ryan Cooper in The Week Demolishes Argument that Electoral College Helps Small-Population States — 15 Comments

  1. It also doesn’t protect rural areas from control by city populations like conservatives love to argue. In winner-take-all systems who effects the outcomes of the winner-take-all electoral vote of a state the most? Cities.

The reason the electoral college is out of whack with the popular vote is because in years ending in 4 or later, the electoral vote totals are already wrong because people have moved. Census should be taken every 5 years or move to a national popular vote.

  2. All the more reason to encourage swing states to adopt ranked choice voting for President.

  3. Electoral College = One of the 3 ANTI-Democracy gerrymander schemes of the SMALL and SLAVE State HACK OLIGARCHS at the top secret 1787 Fed Convention.

State could have a Census population of ONE and get automatic 3 EC votes.

NOW 100 of 535 EC due to States.

100/535 = 18.7 pct BIAS for States — ie about 12.0 PCT BIAS for below average SMALL States

    — each SMALL State having below average number of USA Reps — 435/50 = 8.7 — esp States with 1 to 4 USA Reps.

3 more EC for DC – treated as a State.

Math ROT would be same even with a census each 2 years.

Having only 8-10 marginal EC States promotes having FREAK extremist candidates.

See crop of 2020 RED Donkey Prez candidates with their control freak *plans*.

    DEMOCRACY = MAJORITY RULE.

rural/urban voter density ravings are math MORONS at work.

1790 early on *cities* — under 20 pct

    NOW – cities/suburbs 70 plus pct — SO WHAT ???

Abolish the USA Senate and Electoral College.
    Divide many States.

  4. Walter,

All the more reason to convince all states to adopt RCV for President. If all states had RCV or proportional EC vote distribution, each state would have the ability to tilt the election in either direction. It would be amazing.

  5. Maine and Nebraska style district election of PEs is the more obvious solution. Already has public acceptance and several state legislatures (Penna and Virginia) have recently tried to introduce legislation.

  6. How much cost to process each ballot in Oregon [all mail paper scan ballots] ???

    — IE – ONE page census forms — unless a zillion legal folks at each address.

USA Citizen – birth year – sex.

    See 14-2.

ZERO statist control freak nosy govt spy questions.

  7. The number of campaign events is an awfully strange metric for deciding who benefits from the current, winner-take-all Electoral College system.

Far more salient is that under the current system a Democrat living in a deep red state and a Republican living in a deep blue state can be well assured that their presidential votes will never, ever matter. That is profoundly unjust.

  8. (1) Apportion presidential electors among the United States and their territories on the basis of citizens over the age of 18. Require at least one elector for each 50,000 such persons.

    (2) Require popular election of presidential electors, and give Congress time, place, manner authority in the same respect as they have with the House of Representatives. Set explicit qualification for presidential elector (e.g. 21, citizen for 3 years, and resident of state at time for one year before election).

    (3) Electors meet in single body to choose president and vice president, by majority vote.

    (4) Repeal 23rd Amendment.

    Advantages:

    (1) Recognizes citizens residing in Puerto Rico and other insular territories as right to vote for president. Eliminates disproportionality due to senatorial electors, and makes number of electors broadly proportional to electorate. The size permits meaningful proportional representaion (Wyoming would have at least 5 electors).
    L
    (2) Is respective of federal Union, permitting States to control details of their elections, but Congress could provide for district or proportional election just as they may (and havel for Congress.

    (3) Forms a deliberative body.

  9. How many regimes in the ENTIRE world survive by having one or more Executive officers elected by the human voters in such regimes

    — Federal/National, State, substate ???

USA – States – Counties – cities, villages, townships, etc.

ABOLISH the INSANE minority rule gerrymander byzantine EC NOW.

Uniform definition of Elector-Voter in ALL of the USA.

  10. JR –

How many of the 4 are de facto monarchy regimes ???

    — due to a lack of REAL PR legislative bodies.

  11. NO PR = NO Democracy

    >>> monarchs/oligarchs fill the space.

ZERO new in 6,000 plus years.
