On May 26, elections were held for European Union Parliament in many countries. In Germany, the Green Party placed second, winning 21 seats. By contrast, the Social Democratic Party, long considered one of the two “major” parties in Germany, polled 16 seats. The alliance of the Christian Democratic Union plus its Bavarian partner, the Christian Social Union, placed first with 29 seats. See the wikipedia article.

It’s interesting how minor parties in Europe do better in the EU Parliament than in their respective national parliaments. Has there been any study of this?
Walter, the United Coalition has been studying this phenomena of splinter groups under pure proportional representation since 1992 and with the Reagan Republicans since 1986.
European Union Elections are actually USA when compared to Electoral College but the USA and International Parliaments are mathematically far more perfect on a microscopic scale-study.

@DDR, In Germany, Kreis correspond roughly with counties in the US. The map is similar to a county level map for president.
@WZ, The EU requires proportional elections for the EU Parliament. Germany uses Ste. Lague with a single constituency for 96 members. The wikipedia article is incomplete in not mentioning the other seven parties that received seats, including Die PARTEI (The PARTY), where “PARTEI” is an acronym for its platform, a satirical party. The Pirate Party also won a seat.
