Associated Press on the Many States in Which Republican Legislators Have Passed Bills to Make it More Difficult for Initiatives to Qualify

The Associated Press has this story about the various states in which Republican-majority legislatures this year have passed bills making it more difficult for initiatives to get on the ballot.

The story does not mention California, where Democrats are about to pass a bill that would also make it more difficult for initiatives to get on the ballot.  That bill is AB 1451.

  1. Last year in Alaska, the Government Accountability Initiative was headed for a probable win so the Legislature passed “something similar” to keep it off the ballot. One of the provisions of the initiative was “no budget on time–no per diem”. Now the legislators have ignored their own law and voted themselves the per diem even though there was no on-time budget. It undermines people’s trust in the system. People may say “Why should I sign a petition?”. But a cynical, greedy, lying, back-stabbing legislature is exactly why we need Initiative, Referendum, and Recall.

  2. Could it be that fewer Democratic majority states have initiative in the first place?

  3. SK–

ALL States have ANTI-Democracy minority rule gerrymander systems —

Most — 1/2 or less votes x 1/2 rigged AREAS = 1/4 or less CONTROL.

Top 2 primary States — not the **or less** — BUT with more NON-votes in DD or RR areas — possible UNDER 1/4 Control — esp CA — with lots of illegal invaders being counted in 2010 Census.

    PR and AppV

  4. Any status on the CA initiatives to break the state up or secede altogether?
