Justin Amash Says He is Running for Re-Election to Congress as an Independent — 30 Comments

  1. He drops back… looks down field… has a receiver wide open… FUMBLE!

  2. How about Hail Mary pass – scores — wins game ???

Freedom or tyrant LAWS — being enforced by exec/judic folks.

  3. Under Michigan law, would he be able to run for President and for re-election to his seat in Congress at the same time?

  4. I hope that Justin Amash does run for re-election as an Independent. He has name recognition and many supporters in the district, he can raise money nationally from Arab-Americans, Ron Paul supporters, antiwar Libertarians and even from Democrats impressed with his opposition to Trump.

The party column ballot works against him, and the Republicans will target the district because it is a historically Republican district – Gerald Ford represenated the area in Congress – but even if he loses, he will get a better percentage than most Independent candidates, and his national profile will increase.

And maybe his campaign will highlight issues like party column ballots and excessive partisanship that hinder independent challenges to the bipartisan party.

  5. TomP, that’s a good question. I don’t know the answer. Maybe someone else does.

  6. So Amash has time to go on CNN to bash Trump and the establishment, but his web site (as per Gene Berkman) is very stale. On the homepage, the Latest Updates section – the latest update is 15 months old. He really seems to like the glare of the spotlights, but it appears to me that he’s just phoning it in.

What is the ballot access requirement and due date for an independent House rep in Michigan?

  7. Independent candidate petitions in Michigan are due July 16, 2020. The number of signatures is 2% of the last gubernatorial vote inside the district.

  8. Don Wills- did you check the libertarian republic website I posted on the other Amash story? It seems to refute the site that says he’s in bed with a Chinese company.

  9. Mich Election LAW

Chap 4 is for Prez Electors – mainly major parties.

  10. Ballot access mess due to UNEQUAL LAWS in most States (incl Mich) –

    1. so-called major parties
    2. olde minor parties
    3. new minor parties
    4. independents

Congress RED Donkeys will attempt to wipe out all State ballot access laws – at least for Fed offices.

  11. CO – yes, I read that article and spent quite a bit of time googling around. There are several different takes on the Amash family involvement with Chinese businesses. Additionally, the year that is the source of information for each of the reports is different, and thus the truthiness tends to be somewhat elusive. For example, based on old financial disclosure forms, it appears that the family business did have partial ownership of a Chinese company that supplied their import business with products. However, that is no longer the case. Amash’s brother has recently stated that “at the time [2010] that the family’s company has staff in China who help “facilitate trade”, but stated there was no manufacturing plant”, although the Chinese company where the staff worked did have a manufacturing plant. Amash has recently said that his family’s company now gets the largest share of their products from Taiwan.

I hope we can put this to rest. He might not be as dirty as many of the swamp dwellers, but I don’t think he’s as squeaky clean as many here hope.

He did, however, commit political suicide which is the real story.

  12. He’s done. Between the R, D, and whatever third parties run, his votes will be much smaller than you think. He may end up with only 10%.

  13. me–“only” 10 percent can make the difference in a close race.

  14. You think he will win with 10% of the vote? I looked up his election history. For that to occur, he would need ten people to run against him in the general. He’s never faced more than four or five. I don’t think MI even has ten ballot qualified parties, meaning there would have to be more independent candidates mixed in.

  15. @me: You don’t get it; it’s not 10% to win; it’s 10% (or even less in a close race) to flip the election one way or another.

  16. A statist gerrymander oligarch with 40.1 or 50.1 pct is still a statist gerrymander oligarch.

See the many rotted gerrymander oligarchs in the UK House of Commons elected with under 50 pct in their gerrymander districts.
