D.C. Statehood Bill in Congress Now Has 216 Co-Sponsors — 10 Comments

  1. Doesn’t the Constitution state that Congress would have exclusive legislative power over the federal district? If so, couldn’t any future Congress rescind any act of Congress that granted statehood?

  2. Michael, Agreed. Finish what they started when Arlington was turned over to Virginia. Maryland would get one more U.S. Rep and that’s it. But only on the condition that they repeal the 23rd Amendment. 436 total Electoral votes.

  3. Why not reduce the federal district to the area south of New Hampshire and Massachusetts Avenues, and turn the rest over to Maryland?

  4. The cession was for a specific purpose. If Congress no longer uses it for that specific purpose, it must revert to Maryland.

Congress has authority to require that states permit residents of federal enclaves to vote in state locations.

If residents of commercial and residential areas want full retrocession, grant it to them.

  5. Even-though D.C.’s residents (I believe) have never voted to request state-hood, isn’t it strange that all those Congressman are stampeding to un-Constitutionally(?) grant the District of Columbia state-hood.
Puerto Rico’s people finally voted for state-hood & they’re essentially ignored by the Democratic House who’re always bragging about how much they CARE about Latin people in America.

Richard, how many Representatives have sponsored the Bill for Puerto Rico state-hood?

  6. DC was made a FEDERAL district for the USA FEDERAL govt –

NOT to have State HACKS mess in/with the FEDERAL District.

Another option – BAN all non-USA govt residents in DC,

or deem DC part of MD for electing USA Reps/Senators/EC – repeal 23rd Amdt.

NOW about 90 pct RED communist Donkey voters in Devil City.

What percent of the USA govt officers/employees reside in DC ???

PR and AppV and TOTSOP — now TOTAL Danger in Devil City.

  7. Local DC regime has very limited powers —

See DC Code – USA local laws in DC

    — plus DC local ordinances

    — plus some stuff inherited from MD common law circa 1800.

Also – Foreign govts in DC — NOT to be messed with by State hacks.

  8. 1-8-17
    To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;

NO DC = NO ***Seat of the Government of the United States*** ?????
