According to this story, the Alaska Democratic Party has endorsed Dr. Al Gross for U.S. Senate in 2020. Alaska election laws allow independents to run in Democratic primaries, so perhaps Gross will run in the Democratic primary in 2020.

  1. Not the first time. When Murkowski ran as a write in, the independent was endorsed by many Democrats despite a nominee of their own (who I believe was a former Democrat). The Libertarian was also a Republican using the ballot line. Weird election.

  2. @me,

    You’re con-fused.

In 2010, after Joe Miller defeated Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary, Murkowski toyed with running as the Libertarian candidate. It was after the Libertarian Party declined to nominate her, that she ran as a write-in. The Democrat candidate was a no name who had been the only candidate who had filed.

In 2014, the Democrat nominee for governor, Byron Mallot, abandoned his nomination to become the lieutenant governor candidate for Republican Bill Walker who was running as independent. As a condition for running, Mallot required Walker to change his party affiliation to independent, while Mallot remained a Democrat. Since the Democrats did not have a gubernatorial candidate, the Libertarians finished second among partisan candidates, which gave them seats on the Alaskan Public Offices Commission, which regulates campaign practices.

In 2016, Joe Miller replaced the Libertarian candidate for US senator and finished second to Murkowski. indepenent Margaret Stock was third, and Democrat Ray Metcalfe was fourth. Metcalfe was previously a Republican before forming Moderate Republicans, Inc. political party. Miller declined to support Gary Johnson and voted for Donald Trump.

    The results were R 44%, L 29%, I 13%, D 12%.

In 2017, the Democrats changed their rules to permit independents to seek their nomination. This was thought to permit Stock or Walker to seek the Democratic nomination for governor. The Democratic party won a law suit to permit interlopers seek nomination, but the court required that both their registration and nomination appear on ballots.

Mark Begich, former US senator, decided to seek the 2018 Democratic nomination for governor, so Walker-Mallot ran for re-election as independents. A few weeks before the election Mallot resigned as Lieutenant Governor, and as candidate re-election. Walker endorsed the Democrat Begich, and finished with 2%, which must be a record for an incumbent governor seeking re-election.

Then there is the legislature where both majority and minority House leaders are Republicans, and the speaker is a Democrat who switched to independent before becoming speaker.

    Weird Alaskans.

  3. I knew it was one of the elections Miller ran as a Libertarian. I mixed the 2010 and 2016 elections up.
