  1. Still a 1,000 voters in LITTLE frozen RI ???

    — home of Dorr’s WAR in 1842.

WAR about definition of Elector-Voter and gerrymanders.

RI Const in 1844 — last of 1776 States to get a written const.

  2. Is a filing fee required with this? If not, I have to say that I DO LIKE their system. File the candidate’s intent, THEN collect petition signatures – and neither Democrats or Republicans are exempt! Love it.

  3. Michael Bloomberg’s name is in ALL CAPS – everyone else in initial caps and small letters. The rich really are treated differently from the rest of us.

  4. @JB,

No fee is involved. The SOS is required to provide petition blanks for a declared candidate on the same day that a declaration is made. While declaration may be made between Jan 23 and Jan 25, there is an incentive to file on the first day, since the petition period is so short.

Petitions must be filed by town, and 1000 signatures is a lot in a small state, though it is highly urbanized. Two weeks is a short period, especially if there is a blizzard.

40° is not conducive to signing a petition if it involves taking off gloves while hurrying from car or bus to an office. “That guy in the ski mask keeps watching us, he’s got something in his hand, it might be a screwdriver or a knife.” “There seems to be a lot of homeless guys” “I had one following me, shouting something like ‘Orange Man is Satan!'” “Oh it was just a pen and a clipboard, and a handwriiten sign, “PLEASE HELP I AM A SOCIALIST”. “That’s new, usually it says something about being hungry.”
