Pennsylvania Senate Passes Bill for an Earlier Primary for All Office

On January 29, the Pennsylvania Senate unanimously passed SB 779. It moves the primary for all office, including president, from the fourth Tuesday in April to the third Tuesday in March. It would not take effect until 2024. It would have no impact on petition deadlines for independent candidates and the nominees of unqualified parties.

  1. These early primaries have the diabolical effect pushing petitioning periods deep into winter.

  2. That’s true for primary petitions. Most states don’t have mandatory petitions for candidates seeking a spot on a primary ballot, and Pennsylvania might consider abolishing primary petitions.

  3. Then how do the D/R candidates get on primary ballots in most States ???

esp gerrymander oligarch hacks in State legislatures.

    NO caucuses, primaries and conventions

NOM pets only – spring and summer signers

  4. This would have a negative impact on candidates seeking spots on major party primary ballots, especially those who are not being supported by their party machines.
