Independence Institute Files Amicus in Presidential Elector Case

The Independence Institute has filed this amicus curiae brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in Chiafalo v State of Washington. The Independence Institute brief is on the side of presidential elector freedom of choice, and has a lengthy list of dictionary definitions from the 18th century for the words “elector” and “ballot” to reinforce that opinion.

  1. I had never heard of the Independence Institute until just now. However, their stated mission statement in this amicus brief does not seem to match what is online about them. Wikipedia says they are “a libertarian think tank based in Denver, Colorado. The group’s stated mission is to empower individuals and to educate citizens, legislators and opinion makers about public policies that enhance personal and economic freedom.” From their own website, https://i2i.org/, I see nothing about them being “founded on eternal truths of the Declaration of Independence. The Institute supports the rule of law, which includes application of the plain meaning of the United States Constitution.”
