At the Washington top-two primary of August 4, Libertarian Anthony Welti received 13.4% of the vote in a three-way race, but that was third place, so he cannot run in the November election. His opponents were Democratic incumbent Mike Kreidler, and Republican Chirayu Avinash Patel.
This is the largest number of votes for a minor party or independent candidate for any office in Washington, in a race with both a Democrat and a Republican also running, since Ross Perot’s 1992 showing as an independent presidential candidate.
The “Republican” said he could channel dead presidents, wants to put GEICO out of business and nationalize USAA. He also said in his voter statement that he would use the office “to acquire and manage 168 students as I need in order to major in Every Degree at UW”. He also claimed that he is “the first and only candidate who has ever run to be Insurance Commissioner to be able to de-code classified material based on publicly available information”. The guy is literally not mentally fit to hold an elected position. The only reason people voted for him is that they had never heard of him, or his opponents, and voted for the “R” next to his name. Every major Republican/conservative organization in the state either did not endorse a candidate for the position, or they endorsed the Libertarian.
Top Two… A thing of beauty! Just ask Jim Riley.

TOTSOP
The top-two primary system is a bad idea.
The Democrat got 59%. Since he is obviously preferred by a majority of voters, it makes no sense that he should have to be elected a second time in November.
