Kamala Harris is First Democratic Party Nominee for President or Vice-President from a Western State

Kamala Harris, the 2020 Democratic Party vice-presidential nominee, is the first resident of a western state to be on the Democratic Party national ticket in history. This is statistically odd, because the United States has had western states in the union ever since 1850.

By “west”, I mean Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

  1. I’m not sure what she adds to the ticket that Biden doesn’t already have. California? Women? Blacks? Was Biden in any danger of losing the support that he already has from any of these?

  2. Turnout of younger female and especially black voters is the issue. CA electors are not realistically in play. Biden’s support percentage among demographic segments isn’t really the issue either. It’s a matter of how many of the segments where he has a strong lead have good turnout. Theoretically this is supposed to help him with that. I have my doubts that selecting a former “tough on crime” prosecutor is the best way to accomplish those goals in the year of widespread protests over police brutality even if she does happen to be a black woman herself.

It’s true that politico let the cat out of the bag a while back, but they retracted that. Everyone else waited for today’s official announcement.

  3. I guess Biden is giving up on getting support from Libertarian-leaning Democrats. All Trump (or Jorgensen or Hawkins, for that matter) has to do is replay Tulsi Gabbard’s take down of Harris from the Democrat debates. This is an awful pick.

  4. So, this is all about turnout from a constituency that doesn’t always show up? Seems like a gamble to me.

  5. How many Trump attack ads will be showing BLACK FELON KILLERS/LOOTERS next to Harris Pics ???

    — saying a Vote for Biden-Harris means more BLACK FELON KILLERS/LOOTERS — killing/looting in your burg.

IE making all prior racist stuff be trivial in comparison.

  6. This choice could produce the dystopian result that California’s vote margin for the Democrats will be even larger than 2016, but that Trump could still win.

  7. This comes a day after the wrestler James “Kamala” Harris died of coronavirus.

  8. Terrible choice for VP, but then again, this is the Democratic Party so terrible choices are to be expected.

  9. New Age RED Donkey communists ONLY interested in instant feel-good results

    — to Hell with sanity and rational economics [since 1932].

Not sure which top D/R gangsters as a group have the highest/lowest Pre-Stone Age reptile/spider statist so-called brains.

  10. Demi rot yes hopefully trump floods tv with racist ads. Those would backfire on him in a big big way. Not only black voters but the more educated, younger, liberal and/ or urban and suburban whites will be outraged by any attacks on Harris just for being black, or anything that tries to imply she is a felon when she’s a former prosecutor and current U.S. Senator.

While Harris herself is likely to fail to motivate the increase in black turnout that her presence on the ticket is in theory meant to spur, any racist attacks on her for being black and thus automatically suspect will accomplish what her own less than inspiring record can’t and get more black democrats to show up and vote.

  11. Biden can try but he can’t hide his racism. He has openly said that blacks who won’t vote for him, or even aren’t sure, are not truly black. If that’s not a plantation master mentality what is?

  12. Tulsi Gabbard and Maria Cantwell are western Democrats who received electoral votes.

When William Jennings Bryan was the nominee in 1896, states from Nebraska westward, including Texas, represented 17.7% of the electoral vote.

Richard Winger’s West has 23.8% of the electoral vote.

  13. Of course his home state as an adult has been Illinois, but Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.

  14. A hearty congratulations to women and to us men, who are finally seeing more hope and unity, when there is more competition of ideas and men unite under limited voting.
