Virginia Has Fewer Minor Party and Independent Candidates for Congress This Year Than in Any Year Since 1938

In the November 2020 election, Virginia will have only one independent candidate for Congress on the ballot, and no minor party candidates on the ballot. This is the smallest number of minor party and independent candidates on the ballot for Congress in Virginia since 1938, when there was also only one.

The lone congressional independent this year is David Bruce Foster, in the 2nd U.S. House district. The reason for the much reduced number of candidates is the health crisis.

  1. “…and no minor party candidates on the ballot.”

Does this mean no presidential petitions succeeded either?

  2. To your point, the Virginia LP Facebook Page has a post from Friday, I believe, indicating that they did a turn in. To quote from the post:

“Today, ballots were turned in for final count to the VA Department of Elections (DOE). The count can take up to several weeks until final results are delivered, but the result may be within the week. We will release the final results here as soon as the official count is announced. From the preliminary reports, the Libertarian Party is favorable to be on the ballot. We ask for your patience as we begin the wait. Regardless of the final results, thank you everyone for your hard work and support!”

They don’t indicate how many raw signatures were turned in, or any other details about the petitioning process.

I haven’t been able to find anything about whether other minor parties submitted petitions in Virginia.

  3. What happened to all the Independent Greens who were declared to be running? Should have had the following:
    District 1: Harlan Wahlert
    District 2: Katherine Pettigrew
    District 3: Rachel Batts
    District 4: Albert Burckard
    District 6: Aaron Lyles
    District 7: Peter Marchetti
    District 8: Ron Fisher
    District 9: Jeremiah Heaton
    District 10: Terry Modglin
    District 11: Dianne Blais (G)

Also, there was a Libertarian petitioning in District 6

  4. The presidential deadline is much later than the congressional deadline. The Virginia State Board of Elections web page has the congressional candidates posted, and there is only one independent. That deadline was August 1. The State Board doesn’t have any presidential candidates posted yet. I assume that because the Board posted the congressional candidates, they are finished with the checking process for that office and their list is final. I have been trying to phone them today but can’t get a human on the phone.

  5. Please realize that “Independent Greens,” mentioned previously here, have nothing to do with the Green Party. They are not “Green,” as they don’t subscribe to the Greens’ Ten Key Values, etc. They should change their name.
