Orlando Sentinel Article on Top-Two Initiative in Florida

The Orlando Sentinel has this balanced, lengthy story about the Florida top-two initiative.

It quotes a consultant for the initiative, Steve Vancore, as saying that top-two has existed in “Oregon, California, Washington, and Nebraska.” But neither Oregon nor Nebraska has ever had a top-two system. Vancore also says top-two discourages extreme politicians, yet Washington state, which does have a top-two system, has had two of the most extrene state legislators in the nation, in recent years. See this story about Washington Representative Jenny Graham, who believes in Q-Anon and who threatened a reporter who wrote about her. See this wikipedia article about Washington Representative Matt Shea, who has called for the violent overthrow of the government.

UPDATE: here is a lengthy report on Matt Shea prepared by the Rampart Group for the Washington state legislature, for those readers who feel a wikipedia article isn’t trustworthy.

  1. SEE CA SOS elections part for 2020 CA top 2 candidates. – in the many rigged gerrymander areas.

    NOOO primaries.

    REAL reforms –

PR and AppV – pending Condorcet.
    TOTSOP

  2. Now Richard is quoting Wikipedia, which can be edited by anybody and everybody? What a joke.

Funny how he doesn’t consider any of the elected communists as “extrene” (I assume he meant extreme, spelling error). Richard is letting his biases and true colors out.

  3. Even under a pick-a-prison primary as used in Michigan or Wisconsin, the gate is closed after you have selected a party. Hardly an Open System.

If I can donate $$$ to a Republican and Democrat candidate, put up yard signs or bumper stickers for both, block walk or post on facebook for both, why can’t I support both in the most fundamental way, by voting for them.

Also shouldn’t apples to apples be used if Michigan were adopting Washington’s Top 2? Florida v. California would be oranges to oranges.

  4. I have just now added the Rampart report on Representative Shea, which is a non-partisan, thorough piece of research prepared for the Washington Legislature and requested by members of both major parties. So if anyone doesn’t trust wikipedia, disregard wikipedia and read the Ramport report.

  5. You post a new link, yet can’t fix your spelling error? You also refuse to name a communist candidate as “extreme”? This is a publisher who actually expects us to pay money for his monthly newsletter!

  6. @RW,

I want Debby Democrat to be my state senator, Ronnie Republican to be my state representative and Libby Libertarian to be my county commissioner.

    Check the boxes that apply

    [ ] contribute $$$ to each
[ ] post yard signs for each
[ ] block wal for each
[ ] post on startlegram about each
    [ ] vote for each

Which box is not like the others WHICH BOX DOES NOT BELONG

  7. Did Winger’s mask fall off over Qanon? Side note Qanon has been exposed as a nerd incel from Jersey. Hahahahahaha
