Socialist Workers Party Intends to Place a Nominee for California Governor on This Year’s Ballot

The Socialist Workers Party will attempt to place Dennis Richter on the California 2021 gubernatorial recall ballot. Assuming he gets on the ballot, his ballot label will say “Party preference: none”, whereas members of qualified parties will have their party label on the ballot.

It is not certain when the recall election will be. Although most people assume it will be in November, there is some support in the legislature among Democrats to pass a bill that would make it several months earlier, even possibly as early as August.

  1. Do candidates for Governor in the recall election have to gather petition signatures to get on the ballot? I remember during the Governor Gray Davis recall election in 2003, that the petition signature requirement to get on the ballot for Governor was only 65 signatures, which was why there was such a large number of candidates on that ballot. I have heard that the petition signature requirement has increased a lot since then. I heard somewhere it is now 7,000 signatures. I have not had time to look up the law yet, so does anyone here know what the signature requirement to be an option for Governor that is on the ballot for the Gavin Newsom recall election is?

  2. @Andy,

Elections Code 11381 say nominations are made in the same manner as a regular election.

So 65 signatures plus the filing fee, which is 2% of the governors salary. I think $4200.

  3. If this is the case again, then I imagine there will be a huge number of candidates, just like last time.

  4. Jim is right. The only change since 2003 is the the petition in lieu of filing fee has been lowered from 10,000 to 7,000. But that is a moot point because everyone will choose to pay the $4,000 (approx.) rather than get 7,000 signatures.

  5. Richard:
With each signature worth nearly 60 cents, it would be fun to see someone try the in lieu route. It might be a way to get some publicity for a small (or no)party candidate.

  6. Its silly that the SWP nominee has to appear on the ballot as a defacto independent.

  7. I heard weeks ago that Nickolas Wildstar was going to try to collect the 7,000 valid petition signatures, but I do not know if he is actually following through with it, given that it is so much easier to pay the $4,2000 file fee than to gather the 7,000 valid signatures. Wildstar did personally gather a few thousand signatures on the recall Gavin Newsom petition, but I don’t think he got 7,000 plus signatures, and I think this will be more difficult to get signed. My guess is he will probably end up paying the filing fee. Nickolas Wildstar is a former Libertarian Party candidate who is currently running as a libertarian Republican.

  8. He can deny it all he wants but it doesn’t make it any less true.

Andy Gonzalez is a Google employee who trolls Ballot Access News and superspreads COVID-19 through aggressive petitioning/panhandling.

  9. Thank you Walrus. I thought his denials rang hollow, and you’ve confirmed my suspicions. Does he also follow and worship Soros and Satan?

  10. You can deny it all you want, Andy Gonzalez, but everyone here knows…

  11. This reminds me of when Frankel tried to convince everyone his name was Cannolli.

  12. Yeah, you should never trust a jew or a Mexican. California has a lot of both, which is a good reason to move somewhere better, such as Idaho.
