Eddie Wenrich, a resident of Pennsylvania, says he will be an independent candidate for Governor in 2022. See this story. Pennsylvania has not had an independent candidate for Governor on the ballot since 1942, when John J. Haluska ran, using the ballot label “United Pension.”

Wenrich will need 5,000 signatures, due August 1, 2022.

  1. John Haluska, who served five non-consecutive terms in the Pennsylvania Senate over a span of three decades, was a Democratic senator from Cambria County while running for governor in 1942.

    Haluska, an amateur astronomer and former miner, initially hoped to field a complete statewide ticket that year, but, in addition to his own candidacy, the short-lived United Pension Party only managed to field a couple of state legislative candidates — the most notable being Charles H. Sherry, a western Pennsylvania physician whose meager 421 votes reportedly cost a Democratic incumbent his seat in a race decided by 94 votes.

    Promoting his “60 at 60” plan — a bold pension plan more ambitious than those touted nationally by Francis Townsend and Upton Sinclair — Haluska mounted his third-party candidacy shortly after his proposal was rejected by the Pennsylvania legislature and when members of his own party subsequently refused to include it in the party’s statewide platform.

    Some Pennsylvania Democrats initially feared that Haluska might garner as many as 500,000 votes that autumn, but in the end the Cambria County lawmaker finished a distant fourth behind the Prohibition Party’s Dale H. Learn while polling a scant 7,911 votes — more than a quarter of which came from his home county.

    1. Was the individual on active duty?
    2. Was the discharge not dishonorable?

    If the answer to both questions is “yes” then the individual qualifies as a veteran and is entitled to describe himself as a veteran. If not, he is not a veteran and cannot describe himself as a veteran.

  95. Ok, what’s the name of the 501(c)(3) for which Gary is supposedly? 501(c)(3)’s are subject to open record’s requests from any member of the public. Also, it takes 3 people to form a 501(c)(3), a Chairman, a Treasurer, and a Secretary, and they can’t be family members. Who f is these 3 roles?

    Note that almost all of the “donations” Gary gets come in cash. There is know way to know how much of the cash goes into his pocket and how much goes to the supposed veteran’s charity. It is really easy to skim a lot of money off of something like this.

  96. Gary received a General Discharge from the Army, not a Dishonorable, but not an Honorable either. They should have given him a Dishonorable discharge.

    He never completed Basic Training. He does not tell this to any of his donors as he sits there at a table adorned with flags while wearing a veteran’s hat.

As Andy pointed out, only a small portion of the proceeds has to be shared with the other group. Legally, 10 percent, if I’m not mistaken. I’m not privy to how exactly the paperwork was subsequently straightened out. Only that it was.

    Gary is a veteran, as fact checker pointed out. A general discharge is not dishonorable, and training is active duty, even if one does not complete it. As a homeless veteran, Gary didn’t scam anyone, even for the portion of the proceeds he kept. He did not claim to be a government recognized charity. Even if he ever did, he may have simply been under the impression that his partner Mark, had already done the paperwork, while Mark was lagging. In any case, this has now been corrected.
