    And, the Chinese will certainly try. Central Asia is critical to their “New Silk Road Project”

    The US was fortunate that Germany and Japan were countries with educated populations.

    Other places that the US tried to reform, like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, had much less educated populations, and more powerful tribal cultures.

    Another country that we tried to fix a long time ago, the Philippines, is still struggling between tribalism and modernism.

    It is true that brutal dictatorships make it a lot easier to walk the streets at night without fear of crime.

    But many people who have lived under dictatorships would accept a little crime if they could enjoy the freedom and human rights found in Liberal Democracies.

    Theft in the United States or Afghanistan is not freedom or human rights. Nor is Bacha Bazi (I will accept your description of this because I have never heard of the term before you mentioning it. I will believe you are correct).

    Theft is a violation of the freedom and human rights of the person who has been stolen from. All non-consensual sex is a violation of freedom and human rights.

    Since I am in favor of all drugs being legal I have no problem with the Opium Trade. I think there are worse problems with drugs being illegal than the effects of the drugs themselves.

    No electricity has nothing to do with freedom or human rights. It is a matter of economics and infrastructure that is outside of morality.

    In a free society there will always be some people who try to ignore the rules. That is why there is Law Enforcement and a Judicial System to apprehend and punish the rule breakers. But even then, a Liberal Democracy will treat criminals with human rights in mind.

    Liberal democracy is not compatible with all peoples. Forcing it upon Afghans, as the US tried, led to the quality of life issues I mentioned. The puppet Afghan government was so corrupt and incompetent it caused the issues with electricity availability and lawlessness. The penalty for public corruption is much more severe under the Taliban, and rightfully so.

    It’s not well known but the reason for the creation of the Taliban was due to a warlord capturing and raping two young girls in 1994. There have been many Western lies about the treatment of women under the Taliban.

  28. Rick: I have never said defund the police. I think they should have regular psychological counseling so that the pressure of the job can be better managed. Law Enforcement is essential to a free society.

    East Asian countries with Confucian traditions are fertile ground for liberal democracy, when given a chance. Hong Kong and Taiwan demonstrate that even the Chinese can make it work.

    IMO, it’s only a matter of time before all of China becomes a liberal democracy on a par with Japan. The intense social and political pressure that the Chinese use to control their own people indicates that they are conscious of a deep, frustrating yearning of the Chinese for freedom.
