Initiative Launched in Michigan for the National Popular Vote Plan

An initiative petition drive has been launched in Michigan to provide that the state should join the National Popular Vote Plan. See this story. It is backed by the Michigan Democratic Party. So far, the only state that has held a popular vote on the National Popular Vote Plan has been Colorado, where the state joined, and Republicans then launched a referendum to repeal the law. The voters of Colorado voted to keep their state’s membership in the Plan. Thanks to Thomas Jones for the link.

  1. It’s more than a bad idea. It’s part of a communist plot to make us a province of China!

  2. It’s not sufficient to say that NPV is a bad idea. You must point out why, and offer alternatives.

For, me the biggest problem would NPV is that it doesn’t solve the fundamental problem of plurality voting: you could still get a minority President. Bill Clinton got elected in 1992 with a smaller percentage of the popular vote than Trump got in 2016.

Also, in a close election, NPV could cause significant delays in determining a winner, and open up the election to multiple challenges and recounts. One great feature of the electoral college is that the result is usually quite quick because most states are clearly decided. Another is that recounts and challenges are confined to particular states.

That doesn’t mean that the electoral college cannot be improved. Maine is on the right track by offering a better alternative.

  3. 1. NOOO definition of elector-voter in the NPV scheme from Hell

    — can have those Chinese RED commie hoards voting in USA Prez/VP elections.

    2. Subversion of 14-1 EPCL — voters OUTSIDE a State determining results INSIDE the State.

    3. NO gerrymander congress approval of 1-10-3 inter-state compact NPV scheme.

    3 strikes and O-U-T.
