New Mexico Bill Allowing Electronic Signature-Gathering Advances

On February 10, the New Mexico Senate Judiciary Committee passed SB 8. Among other provisions, it requires the Secretary of State to develop a method to allow electronic signatures on petitions. Thanks to Rick Lass for this news.

  1. This would be helpful in all states. Are there any states that already have electronic petitions in place?

  2. Arizona, but only for petitions to get on a primary ballot. The Arizona law irrationally does not apply to independent candidate petitions, nor petitions for a new party.

  3. Ideally in a democratic society any adult member of society could appear on a ballot by simply identifying themselves and stating their intention to run.
