Libertarian Party and Green Party Will Both Attempt to Petition for New York Governor This Year

The New York Libertarian Party will attempt to collect 45,000 signatures for its gubernatorial nominee, Larry Sharpe, this year. The New York Green Party will attempt to collect 45,000 signatures for its gubernatorial nominee, Howie Hawkins, this year. Both parties are in court fighting that new petition requirement; the case is pending in the Second Circuit.

The petitioning period is only six weeks, and starts in early April. New York is the only state that bans out-of-state circulators for general election candidate petitions. It is possible one or both campaigns might challenge that restriction. It was struck down on May 18, 2018, but then when the state appealed, the Second Circuit said the case is moot because the plaintiff Libertarian Party in November 2018 had become ballot-qualified and didn’t need to petition any more. That case was Free Libertarian Party v Spano, e.d.

Libertarian Party and Green Party Will Both Attempt to Petition for New York Governor This Year — 12 Comments

  1. I’d imagine that getting 45K valid signatures would be a tall order. So I’m wondering — does New York have a law that prohibits a voter from signing more than one petition? I believe some states have laws like that. If New York doesn’t, it might not be a bad idea for the Libertarian Party and the Green Party to join forces in their petitioning efforts.

  2. Does New York still have the law which says that a registered voter can only sign a petition for one candidate for each office?

  3. New York still prohibits a voter from signing both petitions and having both signatures count. The signature with the earlier date counts, but the petition signed later doesn’t count. If the person signs the two petitions on the same day, neither signature counts.

  4. I saw the interview with Larry Sharpe in which he announced that he would be a candidate for Governor in 2022. My best wishes go to him for success.

  5. What’s the source for Howie Hawkins? There isn’t anything about it on the NY Green website or facebook page?

  6. The New York Super-state Senators, one of whose names is Madonna [UN], is working with everyone starting with the Conservative Liberal 1Libertarian Caucus on paper ballots (signature required).

Our team is also bring a second set of digital eballots which elects the Caucus.
