Special Maine Legislative Election

On June 14, Maine held a special election for State Senate, 7th district. The results: Democratic 63.44%; Republican 35.44%; Green 1.12%.

When this same seat had been up in November 2020, the results had been: Democratic 55.02%; Republican 44.98%.

  1. The Special Election results really mean nothing as the legislature will not meet prior to the November election unless something unexpected happens. Other than the Democrat who won the special election being able to update her resume and be considered the incumbent, this doesn’t move the needle much. The percentages are probably eskew a bit too as turnout seemed very low for Maine. The two candidates also will face off in November’s General Election, the Republican Brian Langley previously served as the Senator from this district, although redistricting skews the district more leftward. The incumbent Senator Nicole Grohoski was the most recent State Rep and both candidates hail from the same town, the county seat of Ellsworth. Turnout in this district at the top of the ballot may be what determine the outcome here, and I suspect the margins will be a lot closer in the general.
