On December 9, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed A1819. It bans the words “Independent” and “Independence” from being part of the name of a qualified party. However, those words can still be used as ballot labels for candidates who use the independent procedure.
The law reads: The name of a party shall be in the English language and shall not include the words “American”, “United States”, “National”, “New York State”, “Independence” or “Independent”, or “Empire State”, or any abbreviation or plural thereof, nor the name or part of the name, or an abbreviation of the name, of an existing party.
“Unaffiliated Party” is still available.
What does this mean for the hundreds of thousands that are already registered as IND for the former Independence Party
MN has a similar rule.
Although in MN, Independence is ok, but not Independent or non-partisan.
I think in Minnesota the name of the organization is now Independence-Alliance
