Twenty U.S. House Republicans have been voting against Kevin McCarthy for Speaker. This blog post takes no position on the wisdom of these Representatives’ decision not to vote for their party’s nominee for Speaker. But it seems obvious that the twenty are not “centrists”, or “moderates”.
Open primaries, and proponents of eliminating party nominees in public elections, constantly claim that letting independent voters vote in primaries produce more moderate office-holders. Yet among the twenty who won’t vote for McCarthy, fourteen of them are from states in which independent voters can vote in Republican primaries.
Here is the list of the twenty. The six who are from closed primary states are one from Oklahoma, three from Florida, one from Pennsylvania, and one from Maryland.

Until the 17th century, members of the House of Commons often continued to view their speaker (correctly) as an agent of the Crown. As Parliament evolved, however, the speaker’s position grew to involve more duties to the House than to the Crown; this was definitely true by the time of the English Civil War. It is become more obvious that both major political parties are just shells for multiple factions that are parties in all but name.
Is that a good or bad thing in your opinion? Honestly, I don’t know if it would be better or worse if they were multiple separate parties instead, so I am open to seeing arguments in either or both directions.
The compromise for House speaker should be Justin Amash or Ron Paul. It is my understand that you don’t need to be a sitting member of the House to be the House speaker.
