If a state has an open primary, then each party should be able to determine which candidates can run on their label.
Let parties pick their own candidates however they want to do it. It’s none of anyone’s business unless they are in that party. There would be no issues at all with ballot access or vote fraud if general elections voting was in person and not secret, like in a caucus, town meeting or party convention, and it voter registration was only available in person at the county courthouse, with both registration and voting requiring a current unexpired state driver’s license and on the spot fingerprint verification.
Political clubs should be permitted to print political signs and political mailings encouraging voters to vote for candidates.

I agree with Ed. I would add that in that general election caucus/town meeting voting should only be by party, with voters for each party standing in one corner or section of the room and picking some men (of course, women and children should never be allowed to vote or be in the same building where voting takes place while it is going on) from among them to make speeches to persuade others in the room to either change corners or pick a corner if they start out undecided. There would be a maximum time limit, say two hours. When that limit is reached, you can no longer switch corners, and a count and roll of names is taken. The roll can then be posted on government websites, printed in newspapers, posted on billboards etc, so that all voters can always verify that their vote was tallied correctly. The voting should also be recorded on video so that a replay of the video can take place within a limited time window if there is any question at all from anyone about the accuracy of the tally.
Forgot to mention a few things:
1. Voting should be only by party, never by candidate, so there is only one vote taken per election. The parties can choose their candidates any way they want, and at any time they want – either before the election if they prefer, or wait until the election takes place to see whether they won and have any need to bother with picking officeholders.
2. Voting should be limited to White (95% plus verifiable European ancestry) natural born Men who are over 30, own property in the county where the voting takes place, pay a poll tax which would replace all other current methods of funding the government, be active duty military or veterans, be married with at least two children and never divorced, have a paternal grandfather who voted and owned property in that same county, pass literacy and civic education tests, be firearms owners and verified members of the regular militia, be members in good standing of a Christian church which is accepted as a legitimate Christian church by the county or state council of churches, etc.
3. There should never be any early voting, absentee voting or makeup voting days. You are either there in person on election night or you can try to see if you can do better with attending the next election.
4. As Ed mentioned, voter registration should only ever take place in person at the county courthouse. No exceptions, no excuses.
5. In addition to current drivers license and fingerprint verification at the times of registration and voting, REAL ID and e-verify are readily available tools which can safeguard the legitimacy of elections.
