Hawaii Bill for a Presidential Primary

Hawaii State Representative John Mizuno has introduced HB 342, a bill for a study of a presidential primary. Hawaii is one of the very few states that has never held government-administered presidential primaries. The only other such states are Iowa, Nevada, North Dakota, and Wyoming. Alaska held a presidential primary when it was a territory. Thanks to Josh Putnam for this news.

  1. What does Hawaii actually do, then? They weren’t listed as doing a caucus in 2020, either. Is it simply a vote among party officials?

  2. @Adam Ceriniā€¦ In 2020 Democrats were supposed to have a private primary but had a mail-in only private primary instead (because Covid). The Republicans were set to have one too but cancelled it entirely.

Hawaii appears to not have publicly funded primaries, at least for president.
