New Group Promoting Independent Political Candidates for Congress

Barry Wilson has formed an organization called “56 by 26” to assist and promote Independent candidates for the US House and Senate.

Mr. Wilson, an attorney and former investment banker, was a write-in Independent candidate for US House in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District in 2022. He gathered about 3,500 signatures but was denied a place on the ballot due to a 5,000 valid signature requirement for US House (a relatively low requirement that occurs in years that end in “2” in Illinois; the 2024 requirement will average about 12,000 in Illinois’ 17 congressional districts).

The goal of the organization is to elect 56 (the number of signers of the Declaration of Independence) to the US House and Senate by 2026 (the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration).

New Group Promoting Independent Political Candidates for Congress — 14 Comments

  1. WILL THE GROUP HAVE ANY BETTER IQ BALLOT ACCESS LAWYERS THAN THE LP, GREENS, ETC SINCE 1968 ???

  2. I wish this group the best of luck. Hopefully both chambers of congress will be deadlocked.

  3. I wish we had a thumbs up button in this site so I could thumbs up your comment

  4. I would advise him to recruit candidates from suburban districts, where I think independent candidates have the greatest chance.

  5. Wouldn’t that be something if there was a constitutional amendment that prohibits political parties from running candidates for Congress and congressional candidates could not associate or belong to a political party?

  6. It would be something, but it wouldn’t be a good thing. They can’t prohibit candidates from having the same general views as a party, or association with their friends who happen to belong to a party, etc. Voters would find out which major party the better known, better financed, better connected candidates like better. The other candidates would just be meaningless names cluttering up the ballot to be safely ignored by the vast majority of voters.

People are not suddenly going to start devoting a whole lot more time to looking up candidates who have little chance. This is not speculation. It already happens, like in Tennessee state elections, California gov recall elections, etc.

  7. LEGISLATIVE PARTIES SINCE DAY 1

    MADISON —
    FEDERALIST # 10

    NONPARTISAN EXECS/JUDICS
    P-A-T

  8. What do you want? Micah is right. Yelling your slogans for the ten millionth time doesn’t actually address his argument.

  9. Leave Pat alone, AZ! She doesn’t want you. Go away, sore no party loser .
