Alabama State Legislature Apparently Refusing to Comply with SCOTUS re: second Black majority US House District — 16 Comments

  1. If the law were applied evenly, the legislators responsible would all be held in contempt of court and fined/jailed accordingly. Too bad our country doesn’t have that sort of integrity and accountability, although if it did, many of today’s problems wouldn’t exist.

  2. Since the really funky-shaped redistricting that came into effect in 1993, about 50% (7 of 15) of elections in the 7th District (the one with a Black majority) had no challenger in the general election. In one of those elections, the only challenger was a Libertarian. Not sure about the other districts.

Who cares about Black majorities when the ballots are so empty?

  3. FAILURE OF USA HACKS TO HAVE FINES/JAIL TIME FOR STATE HACKS FOR USA CONST / LAW / TREATY VIOLATIONS.

  4. Adam is 100% correct on the empty ballots. In the 2022 elections for US House, Alabama had two solid red seats that didn’t have a Democratic challenger, but they did have a Libertarian challenger. The Libertarian Party of Alabama had just gotten on the ballot that year and were able to place candidates in all the districts that year. (There was also 1 independent who was qualified in the third district). Without the Libertarians, Alabama could have had some districts without challengers that year. The funky-looking districts are also a red flag for how non-competitive these districts are. It also makes me wonder why a red state such as Alabama would not be able to place its own candidates in all of the districts throughout the years. Surely there has to be some support.

  5. still 1863 in lots of ex-slave state small counties

often 5 member county boards having CONTROL

    P-A-T

  6. Nah. That’s baloney. It’s nothing like 1863 or 1963. Don’t believe fake news and Hollywood lies.

  7. Black people in Alabama are not scared to vote in this century. That’s stupid. Some don’t see anyone worth voting for, don’t care, or don’t trust that votes are counted correctly. That’s their right.

  8. @AZ,

According to the Current Population Survey, only in the South, particularly the Deep South (LA, MS, AL, GA, SC + TN, NC) do Blacks vote in shares comparable to Whites with only a few exceptions.

  9. Don’t mind AZ. He hasn’t been outdoors in decades and doesn’t realize how much the world changed since bell-bottoms and polyester suits were the hot new thing.
