U.S. District Court Refuses to Stay its Own Order in Alabama Redistricting Case

On September 11, the 3-judge U.S. District Court that is handling the Alabama redistricting case refused to stay its own order. Allen v Milligan, n.d., 2:21cv-1291. Here is the 26-page order.

Now the state will ask the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay. If the U.S. Supreme Court refuses a stay, then the 3-judge will prepare their own congressional redistricting plan.

  1. As I see it, the ultimate antidote to gerrymandering is Proportional Representation (ProRep). After all, gerrymandering is entirely a side-effect of winner-take-all elections, where winning 90% of the vote is as good as 60% of the vote in winning 100% of the one seat.

With multi-member seats allocated proportionally (ProRep), 90% wins 90% of the seats and 60% wins 60% of the seats. That means there is no longer much of anything to gain from redrawing the lines!

  2. AZ And his fake news is wrong. Ron Johnson is right. Wind Farms kill whales. The sounds they project through water are like deafening screaming to whales and destroy their navigation. Mothers and calves separate and don’t eat. Windmills are a holocaust for whales, among many other species. See stopthesethings dotcom

  3. Districts served a useful purpose, at least until they got too big, in giving voters personal representation.

  4. MAX POP SIZE FOR ANY LEGIS DISTRICT ???

WHO SEES INCUMBENTS IN ANY DIST ???

TOO BUSY TAKING BRIBES / MAKING THREATS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS ???

  5. At the time of the revolution it was 30 to 50 thousand people per congressman, with maybe 10 thousand voters. Legislative districts were more like a thousand voters, maybe less. It doesn’t work as well now. But representatives still see voters, because most voters aren’t clamoring to see them. They also have staff and various newfangled communications to facilitate it.
