In other democratic countries, strong contenders that can’t win over their party leadership sometimes break away with friends and form their own party. I’m sure I could find several recent examples in several European countries.
The difference here is that RFK Jr has suddenly sprung up as a politician and does not have a network of politicians to form a third party with. Also, whether he’s third party or independent, he faces huge hurdles in getting on the ballot in some states. If he loses, how will the momentum be carried towards future elections, not just of himself, but of other candidates that align with him?

Does anyone have any idea what the back story is to Cornel West not running on the Green Line? seems like a terrible move if I was him. makes much more sense from RFK position.
