Taiwan Presidential Election

On January 13, Taiwan held a presidential election.  See the wikipedia article, which shows that three candidates were on the ballot and the winner, Lai Ching-te, won with 40%.  One of his opponents received 33% and one received 26%.  There is no provision for a run-off.

  1. Interesting that the Taiwan Peoples Party is not a part of either the Pan-Green or Pan-Blue Coalitions, so their party color is cyan.

Separate Michigan GOP group votes to keep Kristina Karamo as chairwoman

    The Detroit News
Supporters of Kristina Karamo struck back Saturday, voting 59-1 to keep her as the Michigan Republican Party’s leader and potentially tightening their grasp on the future of the state GOP.

The vote, which took place at a banquet center in Houghton Lake amid snowy weather outside, marked a win for Karamo, a former secretary of state nominee who’s term as party chairwoman has been rocked by financial struggles and internal divisions.

Seven days earlier, at a meeting organized by opponents of Karamo, a different group of Republican state committee members voted 40-5 in favor of unseating her.

Those Republicans have argued that Malinda Pego, who has been Karamo’s co-chairwoman, is now the party’s acting chairwoman.

WHO HAS THE BEST RIGGED ELECTIONS ???

ANOTHER ELECTION MESS FOR YEARS TO COME ???

  3. China’s ballistic missiles are filled with water instead of rocket fuel. They are not attacking anyone soon.

  4. Taiwan uses the popular vote and not an electoral college like the US. But if they did, then the third place ticket, which got over 26% of the vote, did not carry a single city/county. In 1992, Ross Perot got almost 19% of the vote, but did not carry a single state. But George Wallace carried five states in 1968.

  5. George Wallace also picked up a faithless Republican electoral voter from North Carolina, instead of Richard Nixon.

  7. China doesn’t need ballistic missiles to invade or blockade Taiwan. They have an army, navy, and air force.

  8. Governor Wallace ignored practically everyone’s advice, mine included, and campaigned in a bunch of far flung Yankee states instead of winnable border states like Kentucky. Had he listened to staff and friends, he’d have thrown into the House and had much more leverage over Nixon. We could have stopped forced integration and race mixing, “reverse” discrimination, and much more. Quite likely, we’d have never lost Southeast Asia to the communist Borg empire of Satan.

It wasn’t until later that we learned Governor Wallace never believed in the issue stances that got him elected and nationally famous. It was a public performance persons he came up with after losing his first gubernatorial race and abandoned after the assassination attempt that left him crippled. Before and after those bookends, he was a lifelong liberal, which is why he lost in, iirc 1958, when the KKK and Citizens Councils backed Patterson. Wallace won the following time with his rhetoric he never actually believed because political office and adoring crowds were more important to him than his actual views, at least until it landed him in a wheelchair.

Contrast that with Lester Maddox, a true hero and the real deal

  9. What makes you think China’s army, navy, and air force are in any better shape than its rocket force?

  10. Blockading, maybe. It would depend on the world’s response.

Invading, absolutely not. In order to invade, China would have to put people and equipment on transport boats and then sail 100 miles across open water as Taiwan is shooting at them and, depending on how Biden is feeling that day, possibly US submarines also picking them off. And if China’s rocket force is still out of commission then they will also be bombed by US planes because China’s air force isn’t capable of standing against the US’ for more than a half an hour. Possibly a few other countries might join in on that, also. Ukraine isn’t at all important to the US other than as a way to chew up Russia’s military. Taiwan actually is important. Without Taiwan we’d have to go back to using landlines, or something, and have cars where you have to manually roll up the windows. Also, Russia isn’t a threat to dominate the global order because it doesn’t have the people or economy, but China might someday be capable of that, so Biden would likely jump at the opportunity to stomp them down.

And then there’s the day after. Russia level sanctions on China and an easily implemented blockade of oil coming from the Middle East means China is essentially out of fuel in 3 months except for the trickle it produces domestically and a bit that comes from Russia. It will be out of food shortly after. The end of trade with the US and Europe would send China into Great Depression levels of unemployment. Its US government debt holdings could be canceled. That’s $860 Billion up in smoke. And none of that stops even if the invasion is successful. Even if China “wins” Taiwan… it doesn’t win.

  11. China’s military is totally untested, and thoroughly corrupt. Xi can’t sack his generals fast enough to keep up with their incompetence.
