In an upcoming edition of Ballot Access News, I will be reviewing Rick Hasen’s new book “A Real Right to Vote: How a Constitutional Amendment Can Safeguard American Democracy.”

  7. There is no conflict between a country being both a democracy and a republic. “Republic” means a democracy without a monarch.

  8. That’s incorrect. A Republic is not a democracy. The difference was widely understood at the time of the founders and up through around WWI.

  10. Of course not. And that’s not enough anyway. You have to get rid of everyone who wouldn’t be here except for the 1965 immigration law, and reverse the legal changes that have taken place since then, just for starters, to start fixing what’s wrong with this country. 1865 would be much better.

  11. There are definitions of democracy and republic under which there can be an overlap. However, a republic can be a nondemocracy and a democracy doesn’t have to be a republic.
