Robert F. Kennedy Uses Convention Method to Qualify in Iowa

On Saturday, April 13, Robert F. Kennedy held a campaign meeting in Iowa, in order to get on the ballot without the need for a petition. Iowa lets independent candidates, and the nominees of unqualified parties, get on the ballot if they have 500 voters at a meeting. The Kennedy meeting had 686 eligible voters, so he has essentially completed his ballot access work in that state. See this story.

The method is very seldom used. A few years ago the legislature increased the attendance requirement from 250 to 500.

At the Iowa event, Kennedy said he is no longer interested in the Libertarian nomination.

  1. Oregon also apparently has this method of qualifying for the ballot, at least for President, and I heard he was going to do this there.

  2. As a co-founder of the Libertarian Party I very much welcome RFK Jr’s abandoning any flirtation with seeking the LP nomination. LP officials should never have tried to seduce him by flashing ballot access.

  3. Dr. Rectenwald will be a suitable l.p. Candidate during McArdle’s second term as chair. I have not looked into the age of Austin Padgett to see whether he might be a possible VP candidate. Or, how about Andy Jacobs for VP? Unfortunately, Adrian Malagon sounds like he won’t be available, although perhaps he could be nominated in absentia? I think a lot of potential candidates will be working with Libertarians for Trump instead.

  4. END HAVING EXTREMIST MONARCHS/OLIGARCHS PICK / RIG CANDIDATES.

NOOOOO EXTREMIST PARTY HACK CAUCUSES / PRIMARIES / CONVENTIONS

  5. Trump is the most libertarian, and best, President since Andrew Jackson. It makes no sense to run against him.

  6. Libertarians running against Trump is silly. It’s like if Communists ran against Biden. Makes no sense at all.

  7. These people who attended Kennedy’s event had to get up and get there themselves. That shows more interest than passively signing a petition paper held by a person who is paid to walk up to you and ask you to sign.

  8. The Washington state procedure is more like a one-day petition drive in certain spots that have been selected a week earlier, with newspaper legal notices saying where they are. Although the various local “meetings” don’t all need to be on the same day. But one can handle it easily with a meeting of 1,000 voters.

  9. But it could be a traditional meeting in one place on one day for someone like RFK who can draw enough people, at least as far as I know.

  10. It is the system used in Texas, but rather than attending a single meeting, voters attend precinct conventions who elect delegates to county conventions and subsequently to the state convention.

  11. HOW UN-EQUAL IS THE TX PARTY HACK SYSTEM ???

    PRECINCT CONV >>> HIGHER LEVELS OF UN-EQUAL REPRESENTATION. — COUNTY/DIST >>> STATE

  12. @AZ,

For the Libertarian Party of Texas, delegates to the state convention are apportioned based on the votes received by statewide candidates in the prior election.

This is per the bylaws of the party. See T.E.C. 181.062
