More on SB 2412 in Illinois

Following up on Richard Winger’s post yesterday about this bill, here is a commentary from the Illinois Policy Institute.

And, here is a link to my Chicago Tribune oped of July 10, 2023 on the ballot access barriers to third party and independent candidates in Illinois. All 118 Illinois House and 59 Illinois Senate seats were on the November 2022 ballot in Illinois. There were zero independent and zero third party candidates in all 177 of those elections.

  2. Recorded history doesn’t go back 10k years. As for what can be gleaned from archaeologists about what went on before recorded history, it’s unlikely anything substantial changed 10k years ago on a global scale. Human brains haven’t changed substantially in about 40k years, so tribal government 10k years ago was probably pretty much the same as 40k years ago. In more essential aspects, probably the same as substantially even earlier than that.

    Unless you’re a biblical fundamentalist, as speculation about Noah’s ark ending up in Nepal would point to. Currently, the best available evidence is that the biblical flood is loosely based on what was actually a regional flood in what is today Southern Iraq, and Noahs ark would have required multiple miracles to exist as described. But if you’re a biblical fundamentalist, the world isn’t older than recorded history.

  3. Yeah, Illinois is done for without third party and independent candidates.

  4. How will they help it they don’t win or swing any significant number of elections?

  5. Illinois is done for. Downstate would be fine if they could secede, but neither Springfield /Chicago nor DC would acquiesce.

    I think that Illinois has not changed its boundaries in any significant way since it became a state in 1818. For borders to last intact for over 200 years… that sounds unusual worldwide.

    @Bill
    “Each petition circulator can gather signatures for only one party or independent candidate during each two-year election cycle”
    Has this law been challenged in court?

  9. Exactly like Oregon in that residents of downstate Illinois are forced to be governed by state politicians and politically appointed bureaucrats most of them voted against with great conviction if they voted at all, much like residents of Eastern Oregon.

    Unfortunately, to escape this unhappy fate, they must secure the approval of those same politicians and those selected by the more dense residents in the other portions of their respective states, as well as those in DC.

    One might call it taxation with misrepresentation, or something else along similar lines.

  10. @Political Freedom Fighter The only way Illinois will ever make any progress is with abolishing BOTH the Democratic and Republican parties…or even better abolishing authoritarianism.

  11. The only way Illinois will make process is by breaking up into pieces. Unfortunately, that won’t happen any time soon.
