The Independence Party, a party that is forming in Illinois, hopes to get on the 2026 ballot for statewide office. Its gubernatorial nominee is Gary T. Pierce. The party chair is Richard Whitney, who was the Green Party gubernatorial nominee in 2006. Here is the party’s website.
Chances are it is the only third party that will be petitioning in Illinois this year, unless the ballot access laws are eased. The petitioning window opens in February.
Unless there’s some ongoing miraculous legislative big push that I missed to bring IL ballot access laws in line with the First and Fourteenth Amendments, I likely have a better chance at winning the lottery than seeing the state “Democrats” ease the ballot access laws, especially in this political environment.
Oddly enough, ballot access improvement bills did make significant headway in the Illinois legislature some years back. A bill to lower the definition of a qualified party from a group that polled 5% for Governor, to 2%, passed the State Senate unanimously some years ago.
It is possible lawsuits will win.

That is indeed interesting. Any party that managed to make it onto the ballot would have had a much better chance of becoming Established/qualified if that had passed. But I suspect they might have been hoping the still onerous ballot access requirements would prevent new/minor parties from benefitting.
I think a lawsuit might have a slightly better chance of lowering the ballot access requirements if some more novel arguments were presented, if they haven’t been already, ie, compare IL’s requirements to other countries’ such as Canada and the UK; the rigging here in IL becomes obvious at that point.
An Independence Party run by (what Nick claims to be) communists is far less contradictory than a Democratic Party run by folks who don’t support democracy.

Hello, in response to Nick’s comment on communists, he’s pretty far off the mark. The Independence Party in Illinois was created out of the volunteer group that put RFK on the ballot in 2024. We won that petition drive and legal challenge, and plan to win it again this year. Not an easy task but do-able.
Populated with a broad mix of right and left, like a good Independent party should be.
