On February 3, the Mississippi Senate Elections Committee passed SC 518. It would bring back the statewide initiative.

  1. It is inaccurate to claim that SC 518 would restore the initiative.

    It would ***ADD*** the initiative and referendum for statutes. The current constitution provides for initiated constitutional amendments but is inoperative because of the distribution requirement. The proposed legislation would not fix that. I’m guessing that some legislators are fine with killing that off.

    The qualification threshold is higher. The current requirement is 12% of the gubernatorial vote (98,520). The proposed requirement is 10% of registered voters (195,316).
