CBS News Story on Possibility of Two Republicans Being the Only Candidates for California Governor on November Ballot

CBS News has this story about the California top-two system and the 2026 gubernatorial election.

The author misuses the term “runoff”. The California November 3, 2026 is not a “runoff”. It is the election itself. A “runoff” is something that is held when the election itself fails to produce a winner. But the June 2 event is not an “election”, because no one can ever be elected in California top-two primaries. Even if a candidate receives 100% of the vote in June, he or she is not elected. The law was written that way because an 1872 federal law tells all states to hold congressional elections in November of even-numbered years. If California held its congressional election in June, that would violate federal law. The U.S. Supreme Court made this clear in a 1997 opinion, Foster v Love, that told Louisiana to stop electing members of Congress in September.

  31. Compare TRUMP to say Maduro. Under Maduro opposition were put wholesale in secret prisons, disappeared, opposition voices were silenced. The vast majority of the population was driven into severe poverty and millions of people fled the country in all directions. Election results were ignored as Maduro stayed in office.

    Nothing like this is happening under Trump.

    In Iran, thousands of protesters are killed. Nothing like that here.

    There is just no realistic comparison.

    Trump has about exactly as much power as Jimmy Carter or Gerald Ford had when they were presidents. He’s a more effective communicator and less wholly owned by the agents of the real tyranny – but that’s about it.

  46. The spambot is contradicting itself as usual as it points out why Liberator Trump is completely unlike a tyrant such as Hitler, in addition to its historical ignorance (it was not programmed to know that the UN did not exist while Hitler was alive – that was the Allies or Allied Nations).

  47. While it would be nice for two Republicans to be on the final ballot for Governor of California, the people there haven’t earned such good fortune, and won’t get it. The Democrats (more accurately known as demon rats) will consolidate behind a candidate or two before the end of the process.

    Their names will still appear on the ballot, but they have the financial and media reach resources to inform enough of their supporters that they are suspending their campaigns and endorsing other candidates to have the same practical effect.

    Of the more likely events for California, tectonic plate subduction is the least terrible outcome, particularly for the coastal areas.

  49. I’m not sure, but I think even California might be ok once we deport everyone who is in the U.S. illegally, is only “legal” due to the disastrous 1965 immigration law – the worst legislation to ever pass into law in 250 years – and crack down in a draconian way on drugs and crime.

    We would also need to complete dismantle all welfare programs, end women voting, reinstate the draft, bring back prayer and segregation in public schools or privatize them all, and if possible send back the outdated farm equipment of the 19th century to its ancestral continent of origin. As a bonus, all communists would be dropped from helicopters.

    Once those common sense steps are taken, California could perhaps be restored to its former glory when Reagan was governor, but even better without hippie and negro riots.

    Superintendent of Public Instruction and Governor are contested in the same elections, every four years. There are simultaneous elections for Congress. Clearly California could permit election of Governor based on the Open Primary, if a candidate receives a majority.

    In the nine elections since 1990, two have not required a runoff: 1990 and 2014.

    There are five supervisors in Los Angeles County, elected for four year terms, coincident with congressional elections. Two supervisors are elected in gubernatorial election years, and three in presidential election years. In 15 elections since 2014 (3 in each of five districts), ten (2/3) have not required a runoff.

    In California, nonpartisan offices do not require a runoff if a candidate receives a majority in the primary. Voter-nominated offices always have a second round regardless whether a candidate receives a majority in the primary.

    This is likely due to laziness or carelessness on the part of the legislation writers. Ideally, the primary would be much later in early October. For a nonpartisan office you can have an extended lame duck period. There was a mayoral election in San Diego, where by the time the runoff ran around, the voters had forgotten the two candidates who had advanced. The political-industrial complex likes being able to run campaigns almost year round. This gives them more time to shake down donors. They can also run a primary campaign in the spring, and run a different campaign in the fall.
