Candidates running in this party’s primaries are telling voters to register with the No Labels Party to sign the petitions to get them on the primary ballot. Most county recorders, the election officials, still refer to the party as No Labels since the name is part of an ongoing legal dispute. Everyone agrees that thousands of voters signed a petition to create the No Labels Party I. 2024.

As for ex post facto laws, that’s why the US government owes restitution with compound interest to all of us descendants of those who had legally at the time owned property confiscated by an ex post facto law. That has nothing to do with whether slavery was morally right or whether the law should have been changed, it’s just a basic constitutional (and preconstitutional) principle of fairness and law. Society’s moral understanding can evolve, but restitution under the law for confiscation of property which was legal at the time, regardless of what we think of that legality, is owed by law and right.
