Thankfully, at least one court has ruled against the naked power grab, with the Virginia Supreme Court set to rule definitively at some point in the future:
Yet in the meantime, former DOJ chief of staff Chad Mizelle writes at Fox News about a potential wild plan President Donald Trump could carry out to help right the ship:
“Aside from motivating Virginia residents to oppose this power grab, Trump has another tool he can use to “fight back,” to borrow the supporters’ phrase. He could fight fire with fire and choose another type of re-Districting.”
As Mizelle notes, in 1790 both Maryland and Virginia donated slices of land to create the then-new District of Columbia. The government used a significant portion of the Virginia tract to develop Washington, but the southwestern edge of the deeded land remained nominally Virginia as “Alexandria County.”
After years of dithering, the Alexandria County region was “retroceded” to Virginia, in no small part because local pro-slavery Democrat leaders were worried that if the District outlawed slavery, it could affect major slave-trade operations in Alexandria itself.
And it’s here, as Mizelle writes, that Trump could exercise a major executive feint:

As Mizelle notes, if Trump succeeds, it will “not only neutralize the president’s political opponents’ move to stack Congress against him” but also “most importantly, it will save a great number of red Virginians from having their votes canceled out by deep blue D.C.-adjacent liberals.”
As people are fond of saying these days, you can just do things. But maybe the Virginia courts will take care of the problem and render the whole question moot.
