North Dakota Representative Liz Conmy (D-Fargo) was killed in a plane crash on April 25. She was running for re-election in the June primary. It is too late to remove her name from the ballot, but it is expected that write-in candidates will file in the primary. See this story.

I didn’t know there were any of those in NoDak, how did that happen?
North Dakota elects two representatives and one senator from each legislative district. Four year terms are staggered for both the House and Senate. In presidential mid-terms, odd-numbered districts elect all three legislators. Political parties can choose their nominees by convention, with an opportunity for challengers to petition on to the primary ballot.
Conmy’s death occurred in a narrow 62-day window before the primary, otherwise the D-NPL party could have made a replacement nominee. Oddly, the party will be able to replace Conmy for remainder of her current term (until January 2027). To be nominated as a write-in requires the number of votes greater than the petition requirement (165 for this district). Not an impossible task, but requires some organization. North Dakota does not have voter registration and therefore does not have partisan registration. There are no statewide Democratic nomination contests, so there is really no reason to bother voting in the Democratic primary. There is a Republican contest for US Representative, so some voters will vote in the Republican primary for that reason alone.

“The Supreme Court of Virginia has denied a request from Democrats and the state to pause last week’s ruling by a Tazewell County judge, which blocked the State Board of Elections from certifying the results of the April 21 redistricting referendum.” (End of fake news source quote)
Tazewell County Circuit Judge Jack Hurley had already blocked the Gerrymandering scheme before this vote, ruling that the whole thing was illegal on procedural grounds and that changing congressional districts this way required following strict constitutional amendment procedures.
This was almost inevitable, but we’re pretty stoked that the Virginia Supreme Court came through on this one!
