California Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s campaign website has a press release boosting one of her Republican opponents. See this Sacramento Bee story. Matsui has a strong Democratic opponent, Sacramento city councilmember Mai Wang. There are four Democrats and two Republicans running in the primary in the Seventh District. The story says that Matsui hopes to boost a Republican so that he, not Wang, will place second and be her opponent in the November election. This is another example of how the top-two system motivates candidates to make insincere statements to manipulate who places second.

Here is the part of the Matsui campaign website that boosts one of her Republican opponents. As the Sacramento Bee points out, this Republican has not reported any campaign contributions, nor did he put a campaign statement in the Voters Guide.

  13. Proportional Representation is of course a terrible idea that removes the 1 to 1 connection of a representative providing constituent services and replaces it with politicians pointing fingers at each other as for why things didn’t get done (or why bad things did).

    It also makes vote counting more complicated, thus creating even more opportunities for the already insanely massive amount of vote counting fraud. Why take something so already terrible and make it exponentially even worse?

    It doesn’t even work in Puerto Rico. A huge NO to proportional representation.

    To any extent the position will have any power, it will have all the problems of gerrymandering and bribery of congress. To whatever extent those won’t be problems for the new office, that will only be because it will lack the power to do what it’s designed for due to the lack of pull that comes from not having the other powers of congressional office.

    In the meantime, you’ll have only made elections and government more complicated and created a whole new class of government varmint to fight over, clothe, house, and feed, staff, elect, etc. Precisely the opposite of the direction we need to go.
